The four forms, in order
| Step | What it is | When |
|---|---|---|
| Form 1 | Your declaration, filed online with documents and any valuation report | By 31 December 2026 |
| Form 2 | The department's order with the amount you must pay | Within a month from the end of the month you filed |
| Payment | One challan, ITNS 289, for the full amount in Form 2 | Within two months from the end of the month you receive Form 2 |
| Form 3 | Your intimation of payment, with proof | Within the payment window |
| Form 4 | The department's certificate of what you paid | Within a month from the end of the month it gets Form 3 |
Paying late
If you can't pay within the two months, you get up to two more months, with simple interest of 1% a month or part of a month. After that outer limit, four months from the end of the month you received Form 2, the declaration becomes void and you lose its protection.
Worked example
Say you file Form 1 on 20 November 2026 and Form 2 reaches you on 15 December 2026:
- Pay without interest by 28 February 2027 (two months from the end of December).
- Pay with 1% a month interest until 30 April 2027 at the latest.
- File Form 3 with the challan receipt inside that window.
How to pay with ITNS 289
- Logged in: e-File, then e-Pay Tax, then Income Tax Act 1961, then New Payment, then FAST-DS 2026 (ITNS 289).
- Without logging in: e-Pay Tax on the portal's home page, enter your PAN and mobile number, verify the OTP, then pick FAST-DS 2026 (ITNS 289).
