Questions people often ask

How much NPS deduction can I get?

New regime: employer contribution up to 14% of basic (80CCD(2)). Old regime: 10% of basic for the employer, plus up to ₹1.5 lakh of your own under 80C and an extra ₹50,000 under 80CCD(1B).

Is the NPS pension taxable?

Yes. The annuity you receive each month is taxed as income.

From contributions to pension

Three stages.

  1. Contribute each month, with your employer.
  2. At exit, take up to 80% as a lump sum.
  3. The rest buys an annuity: your monthly pension.

Common questions

How much can I take as a lump sum?

Non-government subscribers can take up to 80% at exit and must buy an annuity with at least 20% (PFRDA rules from December 2025). Government employees can take up to 60%.

How much of the lump sum is tax-free?

60% of the corpus, under section 10(12A). The Act hasn't yet been changed to exempt the extra 20% now allowed, so we show it as taxable.

Can I take it all out?

If your corpus is ₹8 lakh or less, yes.

What pension will I get?

It depends on the annuity you buy. At a 6% annuity rate, every ₹10 lakh used gives about ₹5,000 a month.

What return should I assume?

That's your choice; NPS returns depend on the mix of equity and debt you pick. Try a few rates.
