Why can't taxpayers join APY?
Since 1 October 2022, APY is only for people who have never paid income tax.

How APY works
Pay now, guaranteed pension from 60.
- Join between 18 and 40.
- Pay the chart amount until 60.
- Get ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 a month for life.

What is Atal Pension Yojana?
A government-backed pension scheme that pays a guaranteed ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 a month from age 60, depending on what you contribute.
Who can join?
Indian citizens aged 18 to 40 with a bank account, who are not and have never been income tax payers (since 1 October 2022).
How much for ₹5,000 a month?
₹210 a month if you join at 18, ₹577 at 30 and ₹1,454 at 40.
What happens after I die?
Your spouse gets the same pension for life. After both of you, the corpus (₹1.7 lakh for each ₹1,000 of pension) goes to your nominee.
Can a salaried person join?
Only if they've never paid income tax. Most salaried people have, so NPS is usually the option.
