What the new regime ignores
These don't reduce your tax in the new regime, so there's no proof to give: HRA, 80C (PPF, ELSS, life insurance, tuition fees, home loan principal), 80D health insurance, your own NPS under 80CCD(1B), LTA, and interest on a home loan for a house you live in.
What still counts
| Item | Do you need to submit anything? |
|---|---|
| Standard deduction of ₹75,000 | No. Payroll applies it automatically. |
| Your employer's NPS contribution, up to 14% of basic plus DA | No. It's in payroll already. |
| Other income, such as interest or rent | Optional. Telling your employer lets it deduct the tax through salary, so you don't owe advance tax. |
Before the window closes: check your regime
If you have big deductions, rent in a metro, a home loan and full 80C, the old regime can still cost less. Run both. If the old regime wins, you can still choose it when you file your return by the due date, as long as you have no business income. Keep the proofs either way.
Missed something?
If your employer deducted too much, the extra comes back as a refund when you file. If it deducted too little, pay the balance as advance tax or self-assessment tax before filing.
Common questions
Do I need to submit investment proofs in the new tax regime?
Usually no. 80C, 80D, HRA and similar claims don't reduce tax in the new regime, so there's nothing to prove.
Does employer NPS count in the new regime?
Yes, up to 14% of basic plus DA, and it's already in payroll.
Can I switch to the old regime after the proof deadline?
Yes, when you file your return by the due date, if you have no business income.
Two ways to sort this
Do it yourself
- Confirm with HR which regime they're using for your TDS.
- Run both regimes with your real numbers.
- If the new regime wins, there's nothing to upload for 80C, 80D or HRA.
- Tell HR about other income if you'd like the tax taken through salary.
