Businesses with turnover up to ₹5 crore in the previous year show 4 digits on B2B invoices; above ₹5 crore, 6 digits.
Is HSN the same as SAC?
No. HSN codes are for goods; SAC codes, which start with 99, are for services.
How HSN codes are built
Each pair of digits narrows it down.
- Chapter, 2 digits: 85 is electrical machinery.
- Heading, 4 digits: 8517 is telephones.
- Sub-heading, 6 digits: 851713 is smartphones.
- Tariff item, 8 digits: 85171300.

Common questions
What is an HSN code?
The Harmonized System of Nomenclature: a code that classifies goods. India uses up to 8 digits: chapter (2), heading (4), sub-heading (6) and tariff item (8).
What is a SAC code?
A Services Accounting Code classifies services under GST. SAC codes start with 99, such as 9954 for construction services.
How many HSN digits must I show on an invoice?
If your turnover in the previous year was up to ₹5 crore, 4 digits on B2B invoices; above ₹5 crore, 6 digits on all invoices.
Why do so many codes just say "Other"?
"Other" covers everything in a heading not listed separately. Look up the code to see the headings above it, which say what it belongs to.
Does this show the GST rate?
Not yet. Rates changed in September 2025, and we're checking each one against the CBIC rate notifications before showing it.
