Refunds go only to validated accounts
Your income tax refund is paid to a bank account you've pre-validated on the e-filing portal. Our experts check it before you file.
Questions people often ask
My refund failed. Why?
Usually the account isn't pre-validated, or the name or IFSC doesn't match the bank's records. You can then raise a refund reissue request.
My branch merged. Will my old IFSC work?
Banks usually keep old codes working for a while after a merger, then retire them. Ask your bank for the new IFSC, and update it on the tax portal.

Common questions
What is an IFSC?
The Indian Financial System Code identifies a bank branch for NEFT, RTGS and IMPS transfers. It has 11 characters: 4 letters for the bank, a 0, and 6 for the branch.
Where do I find my IFSC?
On your cheque book, passbook, account statement or the bank's app. You can also find it above by bank, state and branch.
Is the fifth character a zero or the letter O?
Always the digit zero. It's kept free for future use.
What is a MICR code?
A 9-digit code printed on cheques, used to sort them. The first 3 digits are the city, the next 3 the bank, the last 3 the branch.
Why do some IFSCs belong to a different bank than my account?
Some co-operative banks use a larger bank's IFSC for transfers. Money still reaches your account; we show which bank holds it.
Which IFSC goes on my income tax return?
The IFSC of the branch where your refund account is. Pre-validate that account on the e-filing portal before you file.
