How are equity fund gains taxed?

Held over a year: 12.5% on gains above ₹1.25 lakh a year. Under a year: 20%.

And debt funds?

Bought on or after 1 April 2023: at your slab rate, however long you hold them.

Measuring your fund's return

  1. Units = amount ÷ purchase NAV.
  2. Value = units × today's NAV.
  3. CAGR spreads the gain over the years held.

Common questions

How do I calculate mutual fund returns?

Absolute return = (NAV now − NAV bought) ÷ NAV bought. Yearly return (CAGR) = (NAV now ÷ NAV bought)^(1 ÷ years) − 1.

What are my units?

Amount invested ÷ NAV when you bought.

What is the return on NAV 50 to 85 over 5 years?

70% in total, or about 11.2% a year.

Absolute return or CAGR?

CAGR lets you compare investments held for different lengths of time. Use absolute return for periods under a year.

What about SIPs?

With many purchases on different dates, the right measure is XIRR. This calculator is for one purchase.
