Questions people often ask

Should I sell everything at once?

Not always. Long-term equity gains up to ₹1.25 lakh a year are tax-free, so spreading a large withdrawal over two tax years can save tax.

Where do I get the exact gains?

Your capital gains statement from CAMS or KFintech, or the fund's app, lists every lot sold with its cost and gain.

How a SIP is taxed

Instalment by instalment, oldest first.

  1. Each instalment is its own purchase with its own date.
  2. Oldest units are sold first.
  3. Held over 12 months (equity): 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh; otherwise 20%.

Common questions

How is a SIP taxed when I sell?

Each instalment is treated as a separate purchase. Units are sold oldest first, and each instalment's gain is long or short term depending on how long it was held.

When is a SIP instalment long term?

For equity funds, when it's held for more than 12 months. Debt fund instalments bought before 1 April 2023 are long term after 24 months; those bought later are always taxed at your slab rate.

What tax do I pay on equity fund gains?

20% on short-term gains, and 12.5% on long-term gains above ₹1.25 lakh a year, plus 4% cess.

Is there tax if I just stop my SIP?

No. Tax arises only when you sell (redeem or switch) units.

How do I find the exact gain?

Download the capital gains statement from CAMS or KFintech for the tax year. It lists each lot sold, its cost and gain.

Why is this an estimate?

We don't have your fund's daily prices, so we assume it grew at one steady rate to the value you enter. The split between long and short term follows your dates exactly.
