What the previous owner paid, and their holding period counts too.
How is gold jewellery taxed when I sell it?
On the gain, not the sale value. Held more than 24 months: 12.5% plus cess, without indexation. Held 24 months or less: added to your income at your slab rate.

Is there tax on gold received as a gift?
Not from relatives, or at your wedding. From others, gifts worth more than ₹50,000 in a year are taxed as your income.
